Team God or Spectator?

I was reminded by looking at my life that one of the mistakes many Christians make is sitting in the Sunday congregation, hoping that they’ll experience God one day. In the human method, Experience comes from Participation. Maybe one should get off that chair, and participate in the Church, to create an opportunity to experience God through others and relationship; rather than being just a spectator. I’m not against miraculous and divine encounters or moments of epiphany and revelation. But God speaks in various ways according to your “DNA”.

A footy fan may feel like he’s a member of the club because he supports and cheers for the team and never misses a live game. But in reality, when the team wins, only the coach, players and manager benefits from a luxurious celebration. That is without you; you were just the spectator, though a fan.

I can be a fan of God, but I’m never a part of His celebration if I don’t play in His team. And I humbly thanked God that I saw the fruits of my life through the participation of this new church plant in this city. I may not be perfect, and am in the process of refining; and will forever be in the process to become more like Jesus, but pressing on in the dedication and determination to serving in God’s house creates the opportunity for God to speak to me and work in my life.

I have been gay for 30 years. And for that long a time I have been serving in the church? Of course, I have weak moments and gave up. I might have given up 78 times, choosing instant satisfaction from the gay world and left the church completely (short and long terms). But pressing on and giving myself just one more chance even though I don’t see what the point is has reaped a higher level of revelation each time.

If you’re in despair in any situation that you’re going through now, and going to church every week doesn’t seem like any help to your situation, try being part of God’s team, not merely just a fan of what’s happening to the people that are benefiting from God’s blessing.
